Big Sky is located in southwestern Montana, 40 miles south of Bozeman and 47 miles north of West Yellowstone on US Highway 191. The Big Sky ski and summer resort was founded first and a small town has since been built around it. The town is not yet incorporated but has various quasi governmental units and services available. With the neighboring Bozeman growing at a rapid rate, the 40 mile spread between the two communities is likely to shrink dramatically within the next ten years.
Big Sky is considered a year-round travel destination and like so many places in Montana, the landscape, offers a wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities.
Average winter temperature hovers around 20 F, with summer temperatures generally climbing into the upper 80's.
